Chapter 1: The Escape Beneath the Garden

The ancient stone tunnels beneath Yu Garden were colder than Shia had anticipated. Every breath he took clouded in the dim light of his glowing amulet, casting faint golden reflections on the damp walls. The sound of rushing water echoed in the distance—a cruel reminder of the rising floods above them.

“Hurry!” Shia whispered urgently, glancing back at the worried faces of the young couple clutching their infant son. The baby’s tiny fists were wrapped in a delicate white linen embroidered with golden dragon symbols. His peaceful sleep felt almost surreal amidst the danger surrounding them.

The tunnels were old, built centuries ago beneath the historic garden in Shanghai’s Old Town, now almost forgotten by time. But they had become a path of escape for Shia and the infant king—the last hope for their world.

“The waters are rising, and the Jade Witch’s forces will find us if we linger,” Shia said, adjusting the amulet that pulsed faintly against his chest.

Ahead, faint moonlight seeped through a crack in the stone ceiling, guiding them toward an underground lake hidden beneath an ancient pavilion.

The Lake of Shadows

The underground lake shimmered with an ethereal blue glow, its still surface reflecting the faint outlines of twisted roots stretching from above. It was as if time had frozen in this secret sanctuary, hidden deep below Shanghai’s bustling streets.

At the water’s edge stood an elegant woman cloaked in emerald robes, her hair cascading like silk down her back. She was Calista, Shia’s mother, a powerful sorceress whose spells had kept them hidden until now.

“You made it,” Calista said softly, her voice echoing over the water. “But we must act swiftly. The portal spell is fading.”

She knelt by the lake, her hands glowing with a radiant white light as ancient runes swirled across the water’s surface. The air grew warmer, and a faint golden portal began to form in the center of the lake.

“Take the child and go!” Calista urged, her eyes locking onto Shia. “Protect him, my son. The future of our world depends on him.”

But then, the faint shimmer of peace shattered. A sharp, chilling voice echoed from behind.

“Did you really think you could escape me, Calista?”

Emerging from the darkness of the tunnels came the Jade Witch, her emerald eyes glowing with malice. Behind her, shadowy henchmen armed with spears of black energy emerged, their movements unnaturally synchronized.

Calista’s face tightened with focus. She raised one hand, a shield spell bursting forth like a glowing wall of light, keeping the witch and her forces at bay—for now.

“Go!” she screamed, her voice cracking with strain.

The young couple stepped toward the portal, but before they could jump in, the Jade Witch extended her hand and whispered an incantation. The parents froze mid-step, their bodies turning to stone statues, still clutching the baby.

The infant slipped from their frozen grasp, tumbling toward the water. Without hesitation, Shia dove into the lake, his amulet glowing fiercely as he reached out and caught the child just before he disappeared into the shimmering portal.

“Find him, my son!” Calista’s voice echoed through the cavern, filled with urgency and love. “Protect the king!”

As the portal closed behind them, Shia could feel the immense surge of magical energy pulling him away, hurtling through space and time. The last thing he saw was his mother’s form, glowing brightly against the advancing darkness.

Arrival in a New World

Shia awoke to the sound of rain pattering against stone. His clothes were drenched, and his amulet pulsed faintly, now a pale gold. Beside him, wrapped snugly in the white linens, the infant king lay sleeping peacefully.

They were in an alleyway deep within Shanghai’s historic district, surrounded by tall shikumen-style stone buildings. The scent of damp earth and distant street food vendors lingered in the air. Neon lights from nearby signs flickered against the rain-soaked pavement.

“Where… are we?” Shia muttered, his body aching as he carefully stood up, cradling the child against his chest.

An old man’s voice broke through the rainfall. “Who’s there?”

From behind a stack of wooden crates, an elderly couple emerged. The man wore a threadbare coat, and the woman carried a small lantern that flickered weakly in the downpour.

“What are you doing here, boy?” the old woman asked, her face etched with concern. “And is that… a baby?”

Shia hesitated. His training had prepared him for many things, but being stranded in an unfamiliar city in an unfamiliar dimension with a royal infant was not one of them.

“Please,” Shia said, his voice trembling slightly. “We need help… my brother and I. We’re lost.”

The elderly couple exchanged a glance before the man stepped forward, extending his hand. “Come with us, son. You both need warmth and shelter.”

Shia hesitated, but the glowing warmth of the amulet against his chest seemed to soften his fears. He followed them through the rain-soaked streets, cradling the infant king tightly against him.

A Temporary Haven

Their destination was a modest shikumen home tucked deep within the labyrinthine alleys. Inside, the warm glow of a small stove lit up the cozy living space. Wooden furniture, faded curtains, and shelves lined with trinkets spoke of years of quiet life.

The old woman carefully dried the baby with a soft towel, her hands gentle and kind. “He’s so small… so precious.”

Shia sat by the stove, his clothes drying as he clutched the amulet beneath his shirt. The old man handed him a bowl of hot noodle soup, steam rising in soft spirals.

“What’s your name, boy?” the man asked kindly.

“Shia,” he replied quietly. “Shia LeBeouf.”

“And the little one?” the old woman asked.

Shia hesitated. The truth was, he had no idea what the infant king’s name was. But in that moment, he remembered his mother’s final words.

“His name… is Lurio.”

The couple exchanged a look, their expressions softening.

“Well, Shia, little Lurio is safe with us now,” the woman said with a smile. “You can stay here as long as you need.”

Shia looked down at the sleeping baby and felt the weight of the world settle on his shoulders. Somewhere beneath the rainy streets of Shanghai, the Jade Witch’s influence was growing. The city was drowning, both literally and metaphorically. And somewhere out there, a mystical artifact tied to the rising floods waited to be found.

As the storm raged on outside, Shia whispered softly to the infant king.

“I will protect you, Lurio. I promise.”
