The Sky Tree Secret: A Tokyo Adventure, Chapter 5
Chapter 5: The Shadow on the Bridge
The Azumabashi Bridge stretched across the Sumida River, glowing faintly under the city lights. From here, they could see the Tokyo Skytree towering in the distance, its light still flickering weakly.
“Okay,” Haru said, holding the map up to the faint moonlight. “The next clue must be here somewhere.”
Tama scampered ahead, its glowing eyes scanning the bridge’s pillars and railings.
“Do you think anyone else knows about Hikari?” Aiko asked softly.
Haru shook his head. “I hope not… but I have a bad feeling someone’s following us.”
Before Aiko could respond, Tama let out a sharp meow and dashed toward the base of a lamppost. Tied to it was a small paper lanternwith another symbol drawn on it.
Haru gently opened the lantern and found a small slip of paper tucked inside.
“Where water flows and golden fish swim, the shard’s glow grows dim.”
“Golden fish… water… could it be Ueno Park?” Aiko asked.
Haru nodded. “There’s a famous koi pond in Ueno Park!”
But as they turned to leave the bridge, a shadowy figure stepped out of the darkness.
“Well, well… looks like I’m not the only one chasing the light,” the figure said, his voice low and gravelly.
He wore a long coat, a wide-brimmed hat, and dark sunglasses—even at night. His face was hidden in shadows.
“Who are you?” Haru demanded.
The figure smirked. “Let’s just say… I’m very interested in that crystal shard. Now, hand over the map, and no one gets hurt.”
Haru took a step back, gripping the map tightly. Aiko hid Tama behind her back.
“Run!” Haru shouted.
They bolted off the bridge, weaving through the narrow streets of Asakusa. Behind them, the figure gave chase, his footsteps heavy and determined.
They ran until they reached the Asakusa Station, diving into the crowd and squeezing into a packed train just as the doors slid shut.
Breathless and shaking, Aiko clutched Tama tightly.
“Haru… who was that man?” she asked.
“I don’t know,” Haru said grimly. “But one thing’s for sure—he’s after the shard too.”
