Chapter 2: Whispers in the Rain
The rain had finally stopped, leaving behind a damp chill in the narrow alleyways of Shanghai’s historic district. Inside the shikumen house, the warm glow of lantern light bathed the small living room. Shia sat cross-legged on a woven mat, gently rocking the infant Lurio in his arms as he stared into the flickering flames of a small stove.
Mr. and Mrs. Chen, the elderly couple who had taken them in, moved quietly around the house. Mr. Chen was sharpening a kitchen knife, while Mrs. Chen carefully folded baby clothes she had stitched from leftover fabric.
“You’re safe here for now,” Mrs. Chen said softly, placing a steaming bowl of congee in front of Shia. “But the city isn’t what it used to be. The floods… they’re getting worse.”
Shia nodded, his fingers brushing against the warmth of the amulet hidden under his shirt. He could feel a faint pulse, like a heartbeat, as if it was trying to tell him something.
Rising Waters
Outside, the faint sound of distant sirens cut through the evening quiet. Somewhere in the city, another neighborhood was flooding. Shanghai had been fighting back rising water levels for months, but recently, the flooding had become unnaturally aggressive, overtaking drainage systems faster than engineers could repair them.
“The city can’t hold back the water anymore,” Mr. Chen said grimly. “The barriers along the Huangpu River are failing. We’ve seen engineers and workers disappear overnight, dragged into the floodwaters. People say it’s just bad luck, but…” he hesitated, his voice trailing off.
Shia leaned forward. “But what, Mr. Chen?”
Mr. Chen’s eyes flickered toward the window, his voice dropping to a whisper. “There’s a legend—a tale of an artifact hidden beneath the city. They say it’s a Dragon Pearl, created long ago to control the flow of water in Shanghai. But if it falls into the wrong hands, it can turn the river into a weapon.”
Mrs. Chen glanced at Lurio, sleeping peacefully in Shia’s arms. “And now the waters are rising… as if something—or someone—is calling to the Pearl.”
Shia’s hand instinctively went to his amulet. Its faint glow brightened slightly at the mention of the artifact. He knew, without a doubt, that the Jade Witch was behind this unnatural flooding.
The Vision
Later that night, as the Chens slept in their small room, Shia sat by the window, watching the dim glow of distant floodlights on the Huangpu River. The amulet grew warm again, its glow seeping through his shirt.
Slowly, he removed it and held it in front of him. The light intensified until it cast golden beams across the room. The surface of the amulet shimmered, and then Calista’s image appeared, her face serene but shadowed with worry.
“Shia, my son,” her voice echoed softly. “The waters are calling, and the Dragon Pearl is waking. The Jade Witch’s influence grows stronger every day.”
“Where is the Pearl, Mother?” Shia asked desperately. “How can I find it?”
“Follow the water’s whispers,” Calista replied. “It will guide you. But beware, the witch’s eyes are everywhere. Protect Lurio. The artifact must not fall into her hands.”
The light faded, and the amulet went cold. Outside, the faint sound of water lapping against stone reached Shia’s ears, carried on the night breeze.
“Follow the water’s whispers…” Shia repeated under his breath.
The Hidden Path
The next morning, Shia prepared to leave the house. He wore a borrowed raincoat from Mr. Chen and carried Lurio, now bundled tightly in a soft cloth against his chest. The amulet glowed faintly beneath his shirt.
“Where are you going?” Mrs. Chen asked, her brow furrowed with worry.
“To find the source of the flooding,” Shia said, his voice firm. “And to stop it.”
Mr. Chen handed him a small leather satchel filled with food and a wooden carving of a dragon, a family heirloom. “Take this with you. It will keep you safe.”
Shia nodded in gratitude. As he stepped out into the mist-covered streets of Shanghai, Lurio let out a soft coo, as if sensing the weight of their mission.
The streets were eerily quiet. Abandoned cars floated in knee-deep water, their headlights still faintly glowing under the murky surface. Shia walked cautiously, following the faint sound of water trickling beneath the city.
His feet led him to an old storm drain entrance near Yuyuan Bazaar. It was partially hidden by debris and thick vines, as though the earth itself was trying to keep it a secret.
Taking a deep breath, Shia carefully climbed down into the darkness.
Beneath the City
The storm drain was colder and narrower than the tunnels beneath Yu Garden. The sound of running water grew louder with every step Shia took. His boots splashed in shallow puddles, and the faint light from the amulet illuminated the moss-covered walls.
After what felt like hours of walking, Shia stumbled upon an ancient stone doorway engraved with dragon symbols and swirling runes. Faint blue light pulsed from beneath the cracks in the stone.
“This must be it,” Shia whispered.
But as he approached, a shadowy figure stepped into the light—a cloaked man with glowing green eyes and a staff carved from dark jade.
“You shouldn’t be here, boy,” the figure hissed.
Shia froze, his grip tightening on Lurio. The baby stirred slightly, sensing the tension in the air.
The cloaked figure raised his staff, and the shadows around him seemed to ripple like water. “The Pearl belongs to the Jade Witch. And you… will not leave here alive.”
Shia’s amulet flared to life, its golden light piercing the darkness.
“Stay back!” Shia shouted, his voice steady.
The figure hesitated, shielding his eyes from the amulet’s glow. In that moment, Shia bolted forward, clutching Lurio tightly as he dashed through the ancient doorway.
The sound of the figure’s voice echoed behind him, rising in fury.
“Run all you want, boy! The witch sees all!”
The Call of the Pearl
Shia emerged into a vast underground cavern. In the center stood an ornate pedestal, atop which rested a glowing, crystalline pearl, radiating soft blue light. Water cascaded gently from cracks in the walls, pooling into a clear, reflective lake below.
The air felt heavy, ancient, and alive.
Shia approached cautiously, the amulet pulsing in rhythm with the Pearl’s glow. But before he could get any closer, the cavern trembled. The faint sound of footsteps echoed from the tunnel behind him.
“They’re coming,” Shia whispered. “And we’re out of time.”
He tightened his grip on Lurio and stepped closer to the Pearl.
