Chapter 3: The Dragon Pearl

The underground cavern felt alive, as though the ancient stone walls themselves were breathing. Shia’s amulet glowed faintly, matching the pulse of the Dragon Pearl perched atop its ornate pedestal. The infant Lurio, bundled securely against Shia’s chest, stirred slightly in his sleep as if he too could feel the raw energy radiating from the artifact.

Behind them, the faint echo of footsteps grew louder. The cloaked figure with glowing green eyes was close—and he wasn’t alone this time.

“We don’t have much time,” Shia whispered to himself, his grip tightening around the baby.

The cavern trembled slightly as faint ripples formed in the reflective pool surrounding the pedestal. The Dragon Pearl shimmered, its light flickering like a distant lighthouse in a storm.

Shia stepped carefully onto the stone platform. Each step felt heavier than the last, as though the air itself resisted him. He reached out toward the Pearl, his amulet glowing brighter with every step.

But just as his fingers brushed against its smooth surface, the cloaked figure’s voice sliced through the silence.

“Step away from the Pearl, boy.”

Shia turned slowly to see the cloaked figure flanked by two shadowy henchmen, their weapons glowing with sickly green light. The man’s hood had slipped slightly, revealing sharp cheekbones and eyes that seemed to glow from within.

“The Jade Witch will have what belongs to her,” the figure hissed.

The Battle for the Pearl

The shadows seemed to pulse and writhe around the cloaked figure. He raised his staff, and the energy crackled along its length.

“You don’t understand,” Shia said firmly, stepping in front of Lurio. “If the Jade Witch gets the Pearl, the flooding will drown this entire city—and beyond.”

The cloaked figure smirked. “And yet, she will rise above it all. The Pearl belongs to her, and you will not stop her destiny.”

Before Shia could react, the figure slammed his staff into the ground, sending a shockwave across the cavern floor. Shia stumbled, clutching Lurio tightly as debris rained from the ceiling.

The two henchmen lunged forward, their weapons glowing. Shia’s amulet flared, and a protective golden shield erupted around him and the baby, deflecting the attacks. But the shield was flickering, struggling to hold against the onslaught.

Shia’s thoughts raced. I can’t fight them. But the Pearl… it might have the power to stop this.

With a burst of determination, Shia sprinted toward the Dragon Pearl, ducking under a slicing beam of green energy. The amulet around his neck began to hum, vibrating in harmony with the Pearl.

The cloaked figure roared, “STOP HIM!”

But it was too late. Shia reached out and grabbed the Dragon Pearl.

The cavern erupted in blinding light.

The Awakening

For a brief moment, time seemed to stop. Shia felt warmth flooding through him, the energy of the Dragon Pearl pouring into his amulet and spreading through his entire body. His mind was filled with whispers—ancient voices, speaking in a language he couldn’t understand but somehow felt familiar.

The infant Lurio stirred in his arms, letting out a soft cry. His tiny hand reached out toward the Pearl as if drawn to it.

When the light faded, Shia was standing in the middle of the cavern, the Pearl still glowing in his hand. But something had changed—the water around the platform had turned crystal clear, and the oppressive feeling of darkness had lessened.

The cloaked figure staggered backward, shielding his eyes from the residual glow.

“No… this isn’t possible!” he hissed. “The Pearl shouldn’t respond to you!”

Shia’s voice was steady, his eyes glowing faintly with the Pearl’s light. “The Pearl doesn’t belong to the Jade Witch—or to you. It belongs to balance. And I won’t let you destroy this city.”

The figure lunged one final time, staff raised high, but Shia extended his free hand. A pulse of golden energy erupted from his amulet, sending the figure and his henchmen flying backward into the darkness.

The cavern trembled violently as cracks formed along the walls. Water began seeping through the fissures, rising rapidly.

“It’s collapsing!” Shia shouted. He tucked the Pearl safely into his satchel, adjusted Lurio securely against his chest, and sprinted toward the tunnel entrance.

The Rising Waters

Shia emerged from the tunnels just as the ancient doorway crumbled behind him. He stumbled into the early morning light, gasping for air as water surged behind him, flooding the passage he had just escaped from.

Above him, the Shanghai skyline glimmered in the dawn light, reflecting off the floodwaters that still lingered in the streets.

But something felt different. The sky, once heavy and oppressive with storm clouds, was beginning to clear. The faint golden glow from Shia’s amulet matched the light breaking through the clouds.

“The Pearl is stabilizing the waters,” Shia murmured, looking down at Lurio, who blinked up at him with wide, trusting eyes. “We did it, little one.”

A New Dawn

Back at the Chens’ shikumen home, Shia gently placed Lurio into a soft basket lined with blankets. Mrs. Chen watched over the baby while Mr. Chen stirred a pot of soup on the stove.

“You did something out there, didn’t you, boy?” Mr. Chen said softly.

Shia nodded, clutching the now-dim Dragon Pearl in his hand. “For now, the waters are at peace. But the Jade Witch won’t stop. She’s still out there… and she’ll come for this.”

Mr. Chen nodded grimly. “Then you’ll have to stay ready.”

Shia sat by the window, watching the light filter through the rising steam of the soup pot. He felt the weight of the Pearl in his hand, its glow faint but steady.

The world outside was still fragile. The floods might have receded, but the danger wasn’t over.

As the first rays of dawn illuminated the ancient streets of Shanghai, Shia whispered a promise to the infant king sleeping nearby.

“I will protect you, Lurio. And I will protect this city.”

Epilogue: The Shadow Remains

Far beneath the ruins of the flooded tunnels, in a cavern untouched by light, a faint green glow pulsed in the darkness. The Jade Witch’s voice echoed softly, carried on the still air.

“The Pearl may be in your hands now, boy… but the city is still mine.”

And in the depths of the earth, the shadows stirred once more.

The End.
