Chapter 1: The Flickering Light
The air buzzed with excitement as Haru peered out of the glass elevator. Tokyo stretched out below him like a glittering sea of lights. Above, the Tokyo Skytree towered into the sky, its slender silhouette glowing faintly against the night.
“Whoa, it’s so tall!” Aiko gasped, clutching Haru’s sleeve. “Do you think we’ll see all of Tokyo from up there?”
Haru grinned. “If we squint hard enough, maybe even Mount Fuji!”
They were visiting Tokyo for the summer, and tonight’s highlight was a visit to the Tokyo Skytree Observatory. The massive structure, standing 634 meters tall, was the tallest tower in Japan. Haru had always wanted to see it up close—not just for the view, but because he’d heard stories about a strange light that blinked at the very top.
“Don’t forget Tama!” Aiko said, holding up the small robotic cat Haru had built. Tama’s metal tail swished, and its eyes blinked a soft green.
“Relax, Tama’s got this!” Haru said with a wink.
They stepped out of the elevator onto the Tembo Deck, 350 meters above the city. Tourists gathered at the glass windows, snapping photos of the dazzling cityscape below. But Haru’s eyes were fixed upwards—toward the faint blinking light at the tower’s peak.
“Look!” he said, pointing. The light flickered once, twice, and then… sputtered, almost like a candle in the wind.
“That doesn’t look normal,” Aiko whispered.
A tour guide nearby was explaining how the light symbolized hope and unity for Tokyo, but Haru could barely listen. His inventor’s instincts were tingling. Something was wrong with that light.
“Do you think…” Aiko hesitated. “Do you think someone up there needs help?”
Haru’s eyes lit up. “Only one way to find out.”
He pulled Tama from Aiko’s hands, pressed a tiny button on its back, and whispered, “Tama, scan for anything unusual.”
The robot cat’s eyes glowed blue as it whirred softly. It tilted its head towards a small maintenance door marked: AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.
“Haru!” Aiko hissed. “We can’t go in there!”
But Haru was already walking towards the door, Tama in hand.
